FreshMobile - A Simple Freshbooks Billable Time Entry Application For Microsoft Windows Mobile

Update – FreshMobile is now open source! Please make it better.

http://www.codeplex.com/FreshMobile

image

I'm releasing a beta build of a time entry application for Freshbooks.  I created it to help make sure make entering my billable time easy when I'm on the go...and I wanted to learn a little more about mobile device development since I typically focus on Microsoft infrastructure products such as Hyper-V or Exchange 2007.

Features

  • (0.5) Retrieves all the projects and tasks from your Freshbooks account
  • (0.5) Submits time entry on the go including Project, Task, Date, Hours, and Notes
  • (0.6) Provides Start/Stop timer with auto round up to the configurable billing increment (default half hour).
  • (0.7) You can now view raw invoice, client, payment, and time entries details from the options menu.
  • (0.8) Add can add new clients from the options menu

Installation ( Windows Mobile Smartphone or Pocket PC)
Tested Devices: WM6 Std Moto Q 9h, WM5 PPC Treo 700w

  1. Install the .Net Compact Framework 3.5 while your device is connected to your desktop.
  2. Install FreshMobile by copying the Cab File to your Windows Mobile device and installing it from file explorer. Download latest Build 0.82
  3. Run FreshMobile from the Start, Programs Menu.
  4. You will also need a Freshbooks account:

Freshbooks Web Based Billing - FreshMobile

Configuration

  1. Open the Options, Accounts Screen
    image
  2. Your Freshbooks URL that you normally connect to on the web.
    image
  3. Enter your API Token found on “settings” at the upper-right corner of any page, Under “step 3,” choose “enable FreshBooks API.”
  4. Enter your billing increment for the hours selection. i.e. A setting of .5 would have the following time pattern in the based on the billing increment to a maximum of 12 hours.
    .5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5, 11, 11.5, 12.

Use

  • Press Get Freshbooks Data to fetch tasks and projects and tasks (also invoices, clients, payments, and .
  • Select the Project and the task you are working on.
Note - You must manually remember what projects are associated with each task.  There may be errors if the task is not associated with the project.
  • Enter the select the hours to be logged up to a maximum of 12 per entry.
  • Press Submit Time. You will get a success message, press OK to clear.  If you receive an error or timeout.

FAQ

  • Error 401 - Your API token or URL is set incorrectly...most likely your API token
  • Connection Timeout.  Make sure you have good reception or have internet access.  If your not connected to the internet, it may timeout the first time, just retry.

Known Issues:

  • Only works with one user, the administrator.  Other users/employees cannot submit time. This is a limitation of the Freshbooks API.
  • Only supports time entries for Projects/Tasks, no invoice support in the short term.
  • Random errors when getting project info or submitting time.  You should be able to just retry by clicking the button again.
  • Tasks cannot be filtered based on project selected due to the current API of Freshbooks...or a heavy performance loss.

Changlog

  • 0.5 - Initial Beta Release
  • 0.6 - Added Timer Start/Stop with rounding up to the nearest billing increment
  • 0.7 - Added view of invoice summaries and clients.  Provided reliability improvements. Text issues with timer notes fixed.
  • 0.8 - Added the ability to add new clients from the options menu
  • 0.81 - Increased timeouts on submit for reliability, added elapsed time to timer, fixed issue on WM Standard where date field would cause a unnecessary scroll bar.
  • 0.82 - Added (or stole more specifically) the icon from the Freshbooks MacOS widget. You must reboot phone to see new icon if you reinstalling due to icon caching of the home screen...again, only if you had a previous version to 0.82 installed.
Installing Windows Vista Drivers on EEE PC 1000 Netbook

I wanted to install Vista on my niece's new EEE PC 1000 Netbook for Christmas, mostly for the great parental controls.  The specs I have:

I took me about 2 hours to track down the latest Vista drivers that will work.  After a straightforward installation, I was quite impressed how quick Vista can be on a low power processor was after a few reboots.

What you need to install Vista on Asus EEE PC 1000:

Key Windows Vista Drivers for EEE PC 1000

Required Vista Drivers to Downloads:

Auto Detected by Vista, Built in to Windows Install DVD:

  • Audio Driver (when Installed with above Asus Instant Key Utility)
  • Web Cam Driver
  • Bluetooth

Available from Windows Update:

  • Video/Graphics Driver: Intel Mobile 945 Express
Run Windows Update, Download Intel Mobile 945 Express Update
Minor Notes
  • Changed the boot order of the drives in the BIOS (F2 Bios) so that the 32GB drive XXX is higher then XXX.  This change makes the 8GB partition not required for booting (no system files).  This is more because of my OCD, then really required.
  • Feeling Adventurous, Install these BETA Multi-Touch drivers for your ELan Touchpad:
    http://www.elantech.com.tw/download.aspx
  • Had to change the boot order of the in the BIOS so that the DVD was first (defaults to removable media, hard drive, then external DVD)
  • You have to enable Bluetooth and Webcam in the BIOS, they are disabled by default.
  • Without the Asus Instant Key software above, Your EEE PC Audio won't work.
  • Without the Asus ACPI driver, your volume keys, and other FN>F# keys won’t work (except brightness).  This is also required to be installed before the ASUS update (for BIOS updates).
  • Don’t delete the small 7MB partition labeled “BIOS” when installing XP/Vista…or you won’t be able to update the BIOS using the ASUS Update Utility. If you do, just download the bios, rename it to 1000.ROM and put it on a flash drive.  On boot, hit Alt-f2 to update from usb flash drive.
  • Disabled the page file to speed performance.  The write performance is horrible on these SSD drives.
Optimize Vista for Netbooks

Since this was for a personal, home laptop...I wanted optimize the netbook experience for a low power processor.

  • Application Experience
  • Desktop Window Manager Session Manager
  • Distributed Link Tracking Client
  • Offline Files
  • Readyboost (Since I have and SSD flash as my C: drive. This not recommended for regular hard drive models (high capacity 80+ GB drives)
  • Tablet PC Input Service
Retromodo: 25 Years Ago Today, Bill Gates Announced Windows 1.0

Two decades and a half ago today, Bill Gates unveiled Microsoft's first operating systems. Oh, it wasn't for sale yet—no, no, it's still only 1983 and we wouldn't see Windows on store shelves until 1985. But that didn't stop the young heart throb Gates.

Gates wasn't at all shy when promoting his debut Windows OS at New York's Helmsley Palace Hotel that day, claiming that it, powered by a unique graphical interface, would be running 90% of IBM systems by 1984 (before missing the launch date by a year, of course). To his credit, that ridiculously lofty number is just about identical to the Windows marketshare of today.

Google Announces Friend Connect Lowering the Barrier to Create a Social Network

Interesting news from Google...

Visitors to any site using Google Friend Connect will be able to see, invite, and interact with new friends, or, using secure authorization APIs, with existing friends from social sites on the web, including Facebook, Google Talk, hi5, orkut, Plaxo, and more.

To illustrate, independent musician Ingrid Michaelson has added music features from iLike with Google Friend Connect and is now able to run the iLike OpenSocial application on her official website (www.ingridmichaelson.com). As a result, starting tonight, fans who visit Ingrid's site can connect with their friends without having to leave the site. Visitors will be able to see comments by friends from their social networks, add music to their profiles, see who is attending concerts, and enjoy other features of the iLike application, all at Ingrid's website. With Google Friend Connect, people will be able to enjoy their favorite features with their friends on any website across the web.

"We want to bring ourselves to every eyeball, not bring every eyeball to us," said Hadi Partovi, President of iLike. "Friend Connect is a significant opportunity for iLike, artists, and fans. The iLike Artist Dashboard™ will be the first content-management system that allows artists not only to post their songs, concerts, and videos to every leading social network from one dashboard, but also to simultaneously manage the content on their own websites."

Google Friend Connect has been developed to lower two barriers to the spread of social features across the web. First, many website owners want to add features that enable their visitors to do things with their friends, but the technology and resource hurdles have been too high. Second, people are tiring of needing to create new logins and profiles and recreate their friends lists wherever they go on the web. Google Friend Connect offers a solution to both these issues.

Turning a Mac Mini into a virtual Windows HPC Server 2008 Compute Cluster

Very cool video walkthrough on how to convert your Mac Mini into a virtual Windows HPC Compute cluster.

I am going prepare a Mac Mini in such a way that you will be able to install a 2 or more node HPC cluster and a head node. Once you followed the steps outlined in the videos you will be able to install a fully functional HPC cluster environment, literally a cluster-in-one-box. This post covers all aspects from reinstalling the Mac OS with fewer options, using less space on the disk to a Boot Camp installation of Windows Server 2008 and configuring Hyper-V. The final steps necessary to install the HPC cluster software are outlined in Giovanni’s document on windowshpc.net.

Why this exercise? Because the small form factor of a Mac Mini makes it an easy to carry demo system and/or a sweet little cluster-in-a-box for testing and development.

Instead of writing up the process and posting screenshots, I screen-recorded all the major events of the installation and configuration. if you just try to do some of the stuff I did or have a different hardware, each individual video should make sense by itself.

Here’s the hardware and software I use to record the screens and do the narration:

The server hardware
  • 1x Mac Mini
    • Core 2 Duo
    • 4 GB memory (yes, I opened the case voiding the warranty)
    • 160 GB hard disk (seemed enough for my purposes)
    • Bluetooth, USB2, FireWire, 802.11G, GigE
  • 1x PC keyboard
  • 1x Microsoft Notebook Optical Mouse
  • I used Media Encoder’s input window as screen (no physical screen necessary)
  • Mac OS install DVDs
  • A bunch of cables
The recording equipment
  • 1x HP Compaq dc7700 Ultra-slim Desktop
  • 1x Epiphan DVi2USB frame grabber
  • 1x mouse
  • 1x keyboard
  • More cable
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows Media Encoder
  • Windows Movie Maker

BTW, I will upload the videos to TechNet Edge for streaming as soon as my account has been enabled. I tried YouTube and SoapBox but both re-encode the videos making it impossible to identify anything. Way too blurry for screencasts. For now the videos are in a public folder on SkyDrive.

Installing Outlook 2007 Business Contact Manager (BCM) with Office 2007

I experienced two errors when installing Outlook 2007 Business Contact Manager (BCM) with Office 2007 Enterprise on Vista.

I have Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise which does not include BCM in the normal setup.  Because I didn't have my CD's handy, I had to download the Office Small Business 2007 trial version's second CD (named Download 2)

You can download it here, but will not need the product key if your enterprise version is already activated. Please note where you extract it and replace that directory location as your <sourcepath> variable used below)

The first issue was an prerequisites error of SQL Express (MSDE) sqlncli.msi package.  In Control panel > Programs and Features, I uninstalled the Microsoft SQL Native Client, VSS Writer, and setup files.  After a reboot, the install ran fine until the BCM phase of the install.

The log file showed this error:

Product: Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 -- Error 1308.Source file not found: <Sourcepath>\BCM\program files\Microsoft Small Business\Business Contact Manager\SetupBootstrap\en-US\WizardResources.resources.dll.  Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.

While no WizardResources.resources.dll exisitiss

To resolve, I simply made a copy the file Wizard.resources.dll in the same directory and renamed the copied file to WizardResources.resources.dll at the following source file location:

<Sourcepath>\BCM\program files\Microsoft Small Business\Business Contact Manager\SetupBootstrap\en-US\

Hope this helps!
